…lest it swallow you whole and spit you out a millennia or two later.
On page 96 of the original Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader rulebook, the Vortex Grenade is described thusly:
A vortex shell creates a small disruption in the space/time fabric, a spinning whirlpool of destruction like a tiny black hole. The disruption is called a vortex field. You cannot see or fire through a vortex field. All buildings, scenery and models caught in the area are destroyed automatically – a vortex destroys all matter and all energy.
Needless to say, they’re one of the fun grenades from the wayback times.
Games Workshop occasionally puts out ‘in-world’ props from their games. Most of these have been from Warhammer 40K, but the occasional one shows up from their other games. In this case (literally), they made a custom carrying case for figures, and decorated it as a stasis chamber for a single vortex grenade. I love collecting in-world props from various media properties, and 40K has no shortage of these!
One of these days, I’ll actually make the interior, and the grenade itself…
So, enjoy these images of this piece of Games Workshop Warhammer 40K History. More to come as I unpack!
